PROBLEM:
Identify and document a meaningful space. Identify every aspect of the space and what it feels like.
I chose my backyard. This space was important to me because I could disconnect from everything and truly focus on myself. In the mornings I'd read here, when I was stressed out I'd lie out on the hammock and feel the warmth of the sun on my face. I'd eat my favorite meals out here, my morning scrambles and my family barbeques. This space is love to me.
PROCESS:
I began by taking photographs of the space, at different times of the day when the sun was at different points in the sky, when the shadows were cast at different angles and different lengths. I took photos of the plants and flowers found in the backyard, of textures and textiles.
IDEATION AND DRAWINGS:
Next I documented in with drawings, with diagrams and timelines and collages, both literal drawings of the space and ephemeral/emotional drawings of the space.
WRITTEN DESCRIPTIONS:
We were required to write literal descriptions of the space, what it looked and felt like. I connected these two descriptions together with the last sentence of the literal page and the first sentence of the ephemeral page. I thought this was a clever way to tie together two very different styles of writing.
Literal Description
Ephemeral Description
INTERVENTION:
Once the backyard was thoroughly documented, find an area of improvement. Using the drawings and documentation as supporting documentation, I settled on the sound as an area that could use intervention.
FINAL PRESENTATION:
RESULTS:
This project, along with the entire studio class (participation, ability to receive feedback, work for other exercises and overall attitude), was our application to the Multi-Disciplinary Design program. There were 90 students who applied to make it into the program, with only 30 making it into the cohort. I'm happy to say that I made it into the program with the efforts I put forth.
This project is so much more meaningful to me now that I don't have this backyard anymore. My family has since moved away to another state, and my backyard now is basically inaccessible. I'm so happy I was able to document my backyard at its' highest peak. I will look back on this project and find myself getting emotional at how beautiful it was, and how much love it contained.
